Changelog
This site changes every day. Here is what changed, newest first.
v1.22026-10-31
- ·The footer now shows support@walkback.live, so you no longer have to hunt for a way to reach us. Next to it is a small mark: a hundred squares, the lit ones are the years lived.
- ·A mistyped country address now tells you plainly that the page does not exist, instead of handing you a blank one.
- ·New icons across the site. Browser tab, phone home screen and shared cards all show the same mark now.
- ·The privacy page now says one more thing: we use Cloudflare's visit statistics to know how many people come by each day. No cookies, no identification, no cross-site tracking — we never see an individual visitor.
- ·Three Chinese phrasings fixed. The pace note said you walk a life through in twenty minutes, but the run actually goes backwards, so it now says you look back over one. The start button read "born again / a life", which does not parse, so it now reads "live / another life". The empty gallery was missing its object.
v1.12026-10-29
- ·The table on the homepage used to ask where you would be born. Today it asks where you will end. Only after changing it did I notice China moved from second to first — 6.8% to 18.3%. These were never the same question.
- ·Everywhere on the site, “this life” stopped being written as an object you can number and bet on. It is a stretch of time now.
- ·“Date of death” became “the end”. “Died at 62” became “lived to 62”. Same fact, but the second one moves the camera off the ending and onto the road. Cause chains stayed as they were — that is a term, and softening it would make it wrong.
- ·I wrote forty things that never happened. The sentence never said, the wedding not attended, the call not made, the sea never reached. They were much harder than “you got promoted” or “you bought a flat” — regret has no picture, only an empty place where one should be.
- ·A year used to hold exactly one thing. Now sometimes two, rarely three. The four-minute pace is the exception: a year lasts three-odd seconds there, and three lines means none of them get read.
- ·The feedback page used to be a message board. It needed identity, publicity and a back office; together that was a burden for everyone. It is an email now.
- ·Someone told me the site scrolls sideways on a phone. I checked. It did. One table was dragging the whole page with it.
- ·iOS silences the web completely when the hardware switch is on, and there is no way to read that switch. I spent an evening on it and found a way around.
v1.02026-10-24
- ·It is live. 173 countries, 26 cause chains, 795 state events, 20 forks in a life.
- ·The ending screen gives you how many years are left, first. It is the only number you will calculate immediately.
- ·Default pace is 40 minutes — about thirty seconds a year. Slow enough that your mind drifts, and drifting is when you start thinking about yourself.
- ·The gallery holds twenty-four lives. All of them are over. Yours is not.
- ·A cause codex, and the If only review.
v0.92026-10-23
- ·Cause chains went from six to twenty, plus six accidents: poisoning, work accident, electrocution, animal bite, flood, earthquake.
- ·Children no longer die in work accidents. That one took a while — the old distribution had six-year-old miners in it.
- ·Four other people born in the same second. When you go, they are still alive.
- ·You can skip what you do not want to read, or let it choose for you.
v0.52026-10-22
- ·Time runs backwards: from the year of death, walking home.
- ·The cut: about six places in a life where you can gamble once. Win, and the end moves back. Lose, and nothing changes.
- ·A death certificate, and the cohort survival curve.
- ·Pixel scenes: ward, street, home, night, delivery room, bench.
